Career
Rajinikanth began his career in 1975 with the Tamil film Apoorva Raagangal, directed by K. Balachander.
He soon gained popularity in supporting and villainous roles, but became a top star with his leading role in Billa (1980), which established him as a style icon and action hero.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Rajinikanth gave several hits, such as Murattu Kaalai (1980), Thalapathi (1991), Baasa (1995), and Padayappa (1999), many of which set box office records and solidified his superstar image.
In the 2000s, after a brief hiatus, he returned with major successes like ‘Chandramukhi’ (2005) and ‘Sivaji’ (2007), the latter of which became one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time and joined the 100 crore club.
He pushed the boundaries further with the science fiction blockbuster Enthiran (2010) and its sequel 2.0 (2018). Both are two of the most expensive and highest-grossing Indian films of all time.
He has also starred in several Hindi films like ‘Hum’ (1991), which earned him pan-India recognition.
Recent releases ‘Petta’ (2019), ‘Darwar’ (2020), ‘Annaatthe’ (2021) and ‘Jailer’ (2023) have further expanded his reach, with ‘Jailer’ grossing over ₹600 crore worldwide.
