He married Aloo Mistry, daughter of Pallonji Mistry, the largest shareholder in the Tata Group holding company, and moved on with their happy married life. Noel and Aloo have three children, Leah, Maya and Neville.
Noel’s eldest daughter, Leah, is the vice-president of Tata’s hospitality arm, Indian Hotels Company Limited, while his second daughter, Maya Tata, is a board member of the Tata Medical Centre Trust.
His son Neville Tata began his career with Tata’s main retail arm Trent Limited, later headed zoo operations, and currently heads Star Bazaar. Noel’s son, like him, is also an Irish citizen.
Career
Noel began his career at Tata International, the Tata Group’s arm for products and services offered abroad. In June 1999, he became the managing director of Trent, the group’s retail arm, which was founded by his mother. By this time, Trent had acquired the department store Littlewoods International and renamed it Westside. Tata developed Westside, turning it into a profitable venture. In 2003, he was appointed a director of Titan Industries and Voltas.
In 2010–2011 it was announced that Tata was to become the managing director of Tata International, the company dealing with the $70 billion group’s overseas business, leading to speculation that he was being groomed to succeed Ratan Tata as head of the Tata Group. However, in 2011 his brother-in-law Cyrus Mistry was announced as Ratan Tata’s successor. In October 2016, Cyrus Mistry was removed as the chairman of Tata Sons and Ratan Tata took over as the group chairman for four months until February 2017. He was made the vice chairman of Titan Company in 2018 and inducted into the board of the Sir Ratan Tata Trust in February 2019.
